¿Qué es el Rugby?...Una locura....Pues de una locura nace el rugby.
Un día como cualquiera y un partido de fútbol como tantos otros, jugado como siempre por los alumnos del colegio que se embestían, chocaban, caían, se ponían de pie, colocaban las consabidas patadas por debajo de la rodilla y luchaban en el scrum para conseguir la pelota, para que sus "traviesos", o "brigadas ligeras", la recibiran y la impulsaran hacia adelante corriendo en malón tras ella, hasta lameta contraria.
Fue entonces cuando uno de esos jugadores cometió una locura. vaya saberse que habrá pasado entonces por la cabeza del joven William Webb Ellis cuando recibió la pelota y la tomó con sus manos, lo que estaba permitido sólo para dejarla caer y patearla hacia adelante, para correr luego llevándola con sus pies rumbo a la meta contraria.
En aquel partido Ellis no la soltó. La aferró bien con sus manos, la apretó contra su pecho y corrió hacia la meta rival, lo que estaba prohibido, anteelasombro y sorpresa de sus atónitos compañeros y rivales que a nada atinaron, pese a la evidente transgresión. Nadie, tal vez incluido él, supo por qué lo hizo. Pero nadie protestó por no haber cumplido con las reglas tradicionales. No sólo nadie protestó sino que muy pronto tuvo entusiastas imitadores.
Esto ocurrió a pocos kilómetros de Straford on Avon, en el condado de Warwicks, Inglaterra. Allí donde se encuentra laescuela pública, del pueblo de Rugby, el colegiode Rugby, fundado en 1567.
Hoy en día, a un costado de su gran campo deportivo, lógicamente integrado por dos excelentes canchas de rugby, en un lugar preferente y bien visible se encuentra una placa de mármol que dice:
"Esta lápida conmemora la hazaña de William Webb Ellis, quien haciendo gala de una gran desenvoltura hacia las regas del fútbol que en aquellos tiempos se jugaba, corrió por primera vez con la pelota entre las manos, dando así origen al hecho diferencial del juego de rugby .A.D. 1823".
El juego y esta modalidad creada por Ellis sin protestas conmuchos imitadores. Muy pronto fueron muchos los que empezaron a jugar al fútbol de esa manera, la manera de la Escuela de Rugby.
